Preparing Your New Hardware
Unboxing and Initial Assembly
The thrill of a new PC build is often tempered by the daunting task of bringing its components to life. Before you can even think about operating systems, a foundational understanding of your new hardware is crucial. Unboxing your components – the motherboard, CPU, RAM, storage drives, power supply, and case – is the first step. Familiarize yourself with each part, consulting their respective manuals to understand their connectivity points and any specific installation nuances.
For the motherboard, identify the CPU socket, RAM slots, and M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs. The CPU, often the most delicate component, requires careful handling. Align the notches on the CPU with those on the socket and gently lower it into place. Secure the retention arm. RAM modules click into their designated slots; ensure they are fully seated.

Storage drives, whether traditional SATA SSDs/HDDs or M.2 NVMe drives, need to be physically installed in the case. M.2 drives typically screw directly into the motherboard, while SATA drives connect via data and power cables. The power supply unit (PSU) connects to the motherboard via the 24-pin ATX connector and the 8-pin (or 4+4 pin) CPU power connector, as well as providing power to storage drives and other peripherals.
Essential Peripherals and BIOS Access
With the core components installed within the case, it’s time to connect the essentials for the initial boot-up. This includes your monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Ensure the monitor is connected to the graphics output port on either the motherboard (if your CPU has integrated graphics) or the dedicated graphics card.
The next critical step is accessing the system’s BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). This is the firmware that initializes your hardware during the boot process. To access it, you’ll typically need to press a specific key on your keyboard immediately after powering on the PC. Common keys include DEL, F2, F10, or F12. The exact key is usually displayed briefly on the screen during the initial boot sequence.
Within the BIOS/UEFI, you’ll want to confirm that all your installed hardware components are recognized. Pay close attention to the recognized storage devices, as this is where Windows will be installed. You may also want to check the boot order to ensure that your USB drive or DVD (if using optical media) is set as the primary boot device for the upcoming Windows installation.
Creating a Windows Installation Media
Downloading the Media Creation Tool
Microsoft provides a convenient tool for creating bootable Windows installation media, known as the Media Creation Tool. This is the most straightforward and recommended method for obtaining the latest version of Windows. You can download this tool directly from the official Microsoft website. Search for “Download Windows 10” or “Download Windows 11” on their site, and you will find the link to the Media Creation Tool.
Running the tool will present you with options to either upgrade your current PC or create installation media for another PC. Choose the latter. The tool will then guide you through selecting the language, edition, and architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) of Windows you wish to install. For modern hardware, 64-bit is almost universally the correct choice.
Choosing Your Media Type: USB vs. DVD
The Media Creation Tool allows you to create either a bootable USB flash drive or an ISO file that can be burned to a DVD.
USB Flash Drive: This is the most common and generally preferred method due to speed and convenience. You will need a USB flash drive with at least 8GB of storage space. The tool will format the drive and copy all necessary Windows installation files to it, making it bootable. This process can take some time, depending on your internet speed and the USB drive’s write speed.
ISO File (for DVD): If you prefer to use a DVD, you can choose to download an ISO file. This file is an image of the entire installation disc. You will then need to use separate software (like Windows’ built-in disc image burner or third-party tools like Rufus or ImgBurn) to burn this ISO file onto a blank DVD. This method is less common now, as USB drives are faster and more readily available.
Ensure the media you create is for the correct version of Windows you intend to install (e.g., Windows 10 Home, Windows 11 Pro).
Installing Windows from Installation Media
Booting from Your Installation Media
With your bootable USB drive or DVD prepared, and your BIOS/UEFI set to prioritize this media, it’s time to initiate the installation process. Insert the USB drive into a USB port on your new PC, or place the DVD into the optical drive.
Power on your computer. It should now attempt to boot from the installation media you created. You will likely see a prompt on the screen indicating that the system is booting from the USB drive or DVD. If you don’t see this, revisit your BIOS/UEFI settings to ensure the boot order is correctly configured.

Once the media boots successfully, you will be presented with the initial Windows Setup screen. Here, you will select your language, time and currency format, and keyboard or input method. Click “Next” to proceed.
Partitioning and Formatting Your Storage Drive
The next crucial step involves telling Windows where to install itself. You will encounter a screen that asks you to “Install now.” Click this button. After accepting the license terms, you will be presented with two installation types: “Upgrade” and “Custom.” For a new PC, you must select “Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)”.
This will take you to the disk management screen, where you’ll see a list of available storage drives. If this is a brand-new drive, it will likely appear as “Unallocated Space.”
- For a New Drive: Select the unallocated space and click “New.” Windows will suggest a partition size. You can accept the default for a single, large partition, or create multiple partitions if desired (e.g., one for the OS and another for personal files). Click “Apply.” Windows will automatically create additional small partitions for system files (like System Reserved and Recovery partitions).
- Existing Drives (less common for new builds but possible): If you are repurposing a drive or have other data on it, be extremely careful. Select the drive or partition where you want to install Windows and click “Format” to erase all existing data. Then, select the formatted partition and click “Next.”
Important: Ensure you select the correct drive for installation. Formatting or deleting a partition will result in permanent data loss.
The Installation Process and Driver Installation
After you have selected the partition and clicked “Next,” Windows will begin copying files and installing the operating system. This process involves several restarts. Do not remove the installation media until the initial setup is complete and you reach the “Out of Box Experience” (OOBE) screen.
During the OOBE, you will be guided through setting up your region, keyboard layout, connecting to a network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), and signing in with your Microsoft account or creating a local account. You’ll also be prompted to set up security features like a PIN or Windows Hello.
Once Windows is installed and you reach the desktop, the next critical step is installing drivers. Drivers are essential software components that allow Windows to communicate with your hardware. Without the correct drivers, your graphics card might not perform optimally, your network adapter may not work, and other devices might be unrecognized.
You can typically find drivers on the manufacturers’ websites for your motherboard, graphics card, and any other specialized hardware. It’s often best to start with motherboard drivers (chipset, audio, LAN) and then install graphics card drivers. Windows Update will also attempt to download and install many drivers automatically, but it’s good practice to check the manufacturers’ sites for the latest versions.
Post-Installation Essentials and Optimization
Windows Updates and Activation
Once your new Windows installation is up and running, and you’ve installed basic drivers, the next crucial step is to ensure your system is up-to-date and activated.
Windows Updates: Navigate to Settings > Update & Security (or Windows Update on Windows 11) and click “Check for updates.” Windows will download and install any available security patches, feature updates, and driver updates. It’s recommended to install all critical and recommended updates to ensure your system is secure and stable. This process may require several restarts.
Windows Activation: During the installation process, you may have been prompted for a product key. If you entered one, Windows should activate automatically once connected to the internet. If not, or if you chose to skip it, you can activate Windows by going to Settings > Update & Security > Activation. You will need a valid Windows product key to activate your copy of Windows. Activation is important for accessing all features and receiving ongoing updates.
Installing Essential Software
With Windows installed and updated, it’s time to populate your system with the software you’ll need for everyday use and productivity.
- Web Browser: While Windows comes with Microsoft Edge, you might prefer Chrome, Firefox, or another browser. Download and install your preferred choice.
- Productivity Suite: If you need word processing, spreadsheet, or presentation software, consider installing Microsoft Office, Google Workspace apps, or free alternatives like LibreOffice.
- Security Software: Windows Defender is built-in and offers good protection, but you might opt for a third-party antivirus solution.
- Media Player: Windows Media Player is included, but many users prefer VLC Media Player for its broad format support.
- Utilities: Depending on your needs, you might install disk cleanup tools, file compression utilities (like 7-Zip), or system monitoring software.

Performance Tweaks and System Maintenance
To ensure your new PC runs optimally for years to come, consider implementing some post-installation tweaks and establishing a regular maintenance routine.
- Startup Programs: Too many programs launching at startup can slow down your boot time. Use Task Manager (
Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to manage which applications start with Windows. - Disk Cleanup and Defragmentation (for HDDs): Regularly run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files and free up space. If you have a traditional Hard Disk Drive (HDD), Windows will schedule defragmentation automatically, but you can run it manually if needed to optimize file access times. (Note: SSDs do not require defragmentation and should not be defragmented, as it can reduce their lifespan).
- Power Settings: Adjust your power plan in
Settings>System>Power & sleepto balance performance and energy efficiency. For desktops, “High performance” might be desirable, while laptops might benefit from “Balanced.” - Virtual Memory (Page File): While Windows manages virtual memory automatically, advanced users might experiment with manual settings, though this is rarely necessary for most users.
- Regular Backups: Implement a backup strategy for your important data. This can be done using external hard drives, cloud storage services, or Windows’ built-in backup tools.
By following these steps, you’ll have successfully installed Windows on your new PC, configured it with essential software, and set yourself up for a smooth and efficient computing experience.
